Rumors Fly on Google China Ops, Baidu Gloats

An unnamed Google (Nasdaq:GOOG) spokesperson said that Google.cn is the only China operation that Google has decided to close, suggesting that other business like the gPhone and gmail will not be affected, China Daily reported January 14The company plans to continue providing Chinese language search results on its google.com site and has not yet made announcements regarding the development direction of its other businesses, according to the Google spokesperson

Google's advertising system is still operating normally, said a Google insiderAccording to another insider, Google only plans to preserve its Android-related business and will retain its team of roughly 100 Android engineers in China, said the China Business News report

Google's current commercial partners in China include virtual community site Tianya Club, download software provider Xunlei, China Mobile (NYSE:CHL, 0941.HK) and Sina (Nasdaq:SINA), the last of whom has a sharing agreement with Google for search advertising, the report said

Ad sales employees at Baidu (Nasdaq:BIDU), which currently holds more than 60% of China's market share, are contacting Google advertising clients one-by-one, China Business News reported January 15 quoting a Baidu employee"It seems like everyone at work has a little smile on their face," said a Baidu insider.
